Glucose dissimilation by Clostridium tetani.

چکیده
Clostridium tetani is generally considered to be a nonsaccharolytic organism and is so described in the most recent edition of Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (Breed et al., 1957). Despite this widespread opinion, evidence to the contrary exists. Achalme (1902) reported the stimulation of growth of this organism by glucose without ferementation of glucose; Reddish and Rettger (1924) and Boorsma et al. (1939) observed the disappearance of glucose from complex media during its growth; and Lerner and Pickett (1945) reported the fermentation of glucose, with alcohol as the major product, by resting cell suspensions of this organism. In this report we present data showing that C. tetani carries out an active dissimilation of glucose initiated by an induced glucokinase, and that it possesses the key enzymes of the glycolytic pathway.

Bacteriol. 89:626-629. 1965.-The higher the temperatures applied to soil specimens, the weaker the toxigenicity of Clostridium tetani strains isolated from them. The glucose- and maltose-fermenting ability of these isolates was inversely proportional to their toxigenicity. The...

The growth requirements of the New York State Laboratories strain of Clostridium tetani were the subject of investigation by Mueller and his co-workers (Mueller and Miller, 1941a, 1942; Feeney et al., 1943a, b). During these studies, a synthetic medium capable of supporting good growth of this strain of C. tetani in primary culture was developed. However, these investigators were interested pri...

Tetanus is an important disease which created by tetanospasmin toxin of Clostridium tetani. In this study we surveyed six important factors including LF, KF, MLD, pH, OD and total protein assay of Harvard 52 (H52), G5 (HG5) and 49205 (H49205) strains of the bacterium to determine which of them were more suitable for use in vaccine production. The mentioned strains were seperatedly reactivated i...

متن کاملDissimilation of Carbon Monoxide to Acetic Acid by Glucose-Limited Cultures of Clostridium thermoaceticum.
Clostridium thermoaceticum was cultivated in glucose-limited media, and the dissimilation of CO to acetic acid was evaluated. We found that cultures catalyzed the rapid dissimilation of CO to acetic acid and CO(2), with the stoichiometry obtained for conversion approximating that predicted from the following reaction: 4CO + 2H(2)O --> CH(3)CO(2)H + 2CO(2). Growing cultures formed approximately ...
